ADYFL U -13S League Cup Final
Saturday 7th May 2011
Tenterden Tigers 2 Wye Juniors 4

Tigers arrived full of hope that after running Wye so close in their last league game of the season they could pull off a victory in this, their first, Cup Final.

Their hopes were short lived however when Wye settled much the quicker into the game and soon had the match by the scruff of the neck. Wye passed the ball around won every 50/50 ball as Tigers retreated deep and struggled to gain or hold possession for any length of time. Karl’s agile saves kept the boys in the match early on but it was not long before the inevitable opening goal came. A free kick was awarded on the edge of the area and the subsequent strike was ably touched on by a Wye striker into the net.

This blow seemed to further subdue the Tigers as much as it inspired Wye and it was not long before a loose ball was bundled over the line for the second. Heads now dropped and Wye took further advantage - moving the ball around with a confident air they added two more, a great goal from the right wing and a slotted finish from the left which put them 4-0 up before the break. Charlie had to come off before half time with an injured ankle.

During the break a fairly despondent Tigers side had to force themselves to get motivated for the second half. Despite that fact that the game, in all probability, was now lost the boys fired each other up for one last effort to restore some pride. A tactical change saw James move from an unfamiliar right back role to his more usual midfield position where Tigers had missed him and lost the battle in the first period.

The second half was like a different match. Tenacious tackling and quality distribution took over where timid play and wayward passes had previously existed. The boys had found their form and they were determined not to go down without a fight.

Miles took over from James at right back and performed admirably. Together with a newly inspired Tom and Joe B playing superbly the three of them formed a disciplined back line that repeatedly caught the over eager Wye forwards off side. In midfield James, Kieran and Declan won tackle after tackle whilst Toby and Ola began to provide viable options out wide that had been lacking in the first period. Up front Hamish and Joe D made positive runs into behind the Wye defence. Suddenly Tigers looked a side worthy of a place in the final.

The boys’ first goal came midway through the half.  A free kick was knocked on and, with the ball bouncing awkwardly in front of him, Hamish calmly lobbed the onrushing ‘keeper to give the team a slim chance of winning. Wye started to show real concern and pushed Tigers back but Karl was equal to all their long range shots and Tom managed to clear one effort off the line.

The boys dug deep into their reserves as they strove for more goals and with 15 minutes to go Hamish scored again, this time a beautifully judged header into the corner of the net. The Wye management team had certainly not expected this response and their urgings became increasingly desperate. Sadly, time was against the boys and try as they might they could not score again. The referee (who, along with his two linesmen, had an excellent game) blew the final whistle on both the match and the season and our exhausted boys left the field as runners up but with their heads held high.

Congratulations go to Wye as Cup Winners and commiserations go to the Tigers. The magnificent effort they put in during the second half made all the travelling spectators very proud. It’s been a great season and to finish as runners up in the both League and the Cup is a very good achievement.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Wye in ADYFL Under 13’s

A sunny but very windy day welcomed Tigers to their final game of the season, pitting them away against Wye Juniors - the dominant and only unbeaten side in the league this season. Tigers knew that they would have to change that record and inflict defeat upon their formidable opponents in order to snatch the league title from under their noses – a tall order but not an impossible one.

Kicking off the first half with the wind at their backs Tigers started brightly, seemingly undeterred by the importance of the game and passing the ball around with their accustomed confidence. Within just a few a minutes a defensive mix up let Toby in for a close range shot which he finished with accuracy. 1-0 to the Tigers already and the boys’ followers dared to believe that the title might be coming home with them!

However the optimism was short lived as a swift counter attack saw the Wye right winger break into the box and his deadly strike brought the game back level with less than 10 minutes played. The following wind meant that the majority of the game was going to be spent in one half and Tigers knew they had to make the most the advantage while they had it. Quick attacks and well worked corners created half chances that came and went without reward as the Wye defence held out. Finally Kieran broke free on the right, cutting into the box he slammed the ball without hesitation past the Wye keeper and Tigers had the advantage again.

The feeling amongst the fans was that Tigers would need more than a one goal cushion to defend in the second half and that goal seemed on the cards when Ola cut into the area from the left, the Wye keeper saved his first effort and Ola was very unlucky when he hit the rebound onto the bar and it bounced agonisingly onto the goal-line and away. A breathless first half drew to a close with the boys leading 2-1.

Into the second half and Tigers soon found themselves under pressure from Wye, but the defence did well and it was some time before Karl was called upon to make a save. The longer the Tigers held out the more their confidence grew and in a rare foray forward a loose ball fell to Joe D whose instant shot unerringly found the back of the net to put the team 3-1 and in sight of the league title. Wye were nothing if not determined and forced a succession of corners to put pressure on Karl and his defenders. Eventually a corner eluded the Tigers defence and was met with a powerful header from Wye’s star player that just could not be stopped. 3-2 and time was ticking away.
There were seemingly just a few minutes remaining when Kieran wriggled free in the Wye half and set off towards goal. Sadly as he struck his shot past the Wye keeper the referee noticed the linesman still had his flag up for an offside from a different passage of play moments earlier and cancelled out the goal. Undeterred Tigers still dug in and in a tremendous effort managed to carve out a final chance which James finished smartly to kill the game off and confirm Tigers as champions. Or so we thought.

In an incredible late twist the referee judged there was still plenty of time on the clock and to their credit the Wye boys took advantage of it. A free kick was won on the edge of the area and superbly taken to put Wye back in with a chance and then moments later a Wye forward fell in the area and a penalty was awarded. Amidst scenes of incredulity the Wye striker calmly placed the ball on the spot, wiped some imaginary mud from his boot and nonchalantly placed the ball into the corner confirming his team as league winners and Tigers as runners up.

This was a really exciting game that could have gone either way. Tigers performed proudly to come within a few moments of winning the league in their inaugural season as an 11 a side team and the manner in which they accepted such a cruel defeat is to be admired. Tigers’ congratulations go to the Wye boys and they now hope to gain revenge in next week’s Cup Final.

Cup Semi-Final

The combination of a hard pitch, a warm day and an opposition in a rich vein of form presented Tigers with a real challenge today. The now familiar 3-5-2 formation gave Tigers midfield a numerical advantage and midfield master Declan soon took charge of the game, winning tackles and spraying intelligent balls to his team mates. The game was goalless when Kieran and Ola interchanged passes before Kieran crossed for Joe D to direct a confident header into the corner of the net past the Hoppers’ stranded keeper.

For a good period after the first goal Tigers dominated the match but Hoppers tactic of long early passes to their pacey striker kept skipper Tom very busy at centre half. One goal is never a comfortable lead and just before half time Tigers good play was rewarded as Ola put Kieran in the clear and he finished well from 12 yards out. 2-0 up at half time was a fair reflection of the play but as Tigers took their welcome break they knew how strong Hoppers Green can be so concentration was needed into the second half.

The real breakthrough came when Joe B, playing his usual excellent game at left back, passed to Kieran who drove into the box before crossing – the chance appeared to have gone but Toby’s opportunistic run bore fruit as the keeper fumbled and Toby was on hand to put Tigers three up.

To their credit Hoppers did not give up and yet another long ball caught Tom (who had had his best game this season) on the wrong side of their forward and as they came together the referee awarded a penalty. A well struck penalty gave Hoppers hope but it was short lived as within a few minutes Toby had scored again.

Tigers resumed their previous dominance for the rest of the half but still the Hoppers strived for goals and another long ball finally saw their best player get properly clear and slide a shot past Karl. The boys are delighted to make a Cup Final and they should be proud to have done so. Charlie and Miles did well today when called upon in occasionally unfamiliar roles and the constantly improving Joe H put in a solid performance at right back. Callum will not be available for the Final so mention goes to him for his good efforts in helping Tigers get there. James was in fine form today and continues to impress in his role in midfield. With two more leagues games to go the boys are now on for an undreamt of League and Cup double if they can maintain winning form.

Match Report Saturday 2nd April 2011
Tenterden Tigers Vs Grasshopper Yellow in ADYFL Under 13’s

Just a week after defeating Grasshopper Yellows in the Cup, Tigers met them again today - this time in the league. It was important for the boys to not be complacent and assume that a victory would come without any effort, especially as the season draws to a close. However a decent win means they still hold slim hopes of winning the league.

Hamish opened the scoring on 10 minutes but Grasshoppers hit back to level the scores after a mix up between defence and goalkeeper let their striker in. The excellent Joe B settled the nerves with a sweetly taken penalty after Hamish had been brought down and then Ola bundled in a cross from Toby to put Tigers 3-1 up. Shortly after that Ola went on an adventurous, mazy run through the Hoppers defence and finished well to add another to his personal tally for the season.

With Hoppers looking deflated after half time Tigers pressed home the advantage. Kieran scored two superbly composed goals either side of another one from Hamish before Declan struck to put the team 8-1 up. Finally Hamish scored once again, now a massive 32 for him this season, to complete the scoring with Tigers running out comfortable winners.

The boys played without the luxury of any substitutes to call upon today so it was all the more impressive to win by such a margin. Some of Tigers’ play was excellent but some of it lacked a little accuracy and the team will be looking to tighten up their passing (and play more as a team than a group of individuals) before next week’s Cup semi- final and the upcoming league tie against Wye. Both those matches will present a much tougher examination of just how far the team has progressed this season.

Cup Quarter Final

Tenterden Tigers Under 13s eased their way into the semi-final of the League Cup today, brushing aside Grasshoppers Yellow in an emphatic victory. It now seems likely that they will meet the stronger Grasshoppers Green in the semi final.

Determined to win the midfield battle, Tigers played 5 across the middle and it soon yielded dividends as Ola swept down the left flank, shrugged off a couple of challenges to get to the by line and unselfishly cut the ball back for Kieran to open the scoring. Then James, continuing in the bright vein of form he has been showing recently, had a shot parried by the keeper which Toby was alert enough to knock in as it rebounded back to him.

It wasn’t long before Kieran had added another two goals, one the result of a particularly fine team move down the right wing, to complete his hat trick (now 20 in all competitions this season). Tigers actually had the ball in the net once again only to see the goal correctly ruled out for off side before Karl was judged to have fouled a Hoppers’ forward in the area to concede a penalty. A thunderous conversion from Hoppers’ penalty taker saw the teams leave the field at half time with Tigers 4-1 up.

The pitch at Appledore can seem huge, especially when you are trailing, as Grasshoppers found and the game became very stretched in the second half. Hamish took advantage of the tiring opposition with an impressive solo run and finish to put Tigers further ahead before Kieran set up Joe D for his sixth goal of the season - a clever strike from 12 yards out. A speculative long range effort from a Grasshoppers midfielder then got them a goal back.

Declan rounded off a superb game, during the course of which he seemed to cover every blade of grass on the pitch twice, with a neat turn in the area to lose his marker and a quality finish. The next round will be harder but if the boys can continue to pass the ball with the neat efficiency they showed today, particularly in the first half, they may have realistic hopes of making the final.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Mersham in ADYFL Under 13’s

A somewhat one sided affair this week between Tigers and the league’s bottom club Mersham saw the boys rack up 18 goals and, in doing so, substantially improve their goal difference. The goals came from Hamish (5), Kieran (4), Ola (3), Declan (2), James (2), Joe D (1) and Toby (1) with Ola’s magnificent long range left foot strike the pick of the bunch.

In truth the score didn’t accurately reflect Tigers’ dominance of the game as Mersham’s well drilled back four caught the over eager Tigers’ forward off side time and time again. That, combined with the heroics of the home side’s goalkeeper, kept the score significantly lower than it could have been.

A good team effort though with some nice individual play, noticeably James who had a terrific game, sets the boys up nicely for the first round of the League Cup next week.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Aldington in ADYFL Under 13’s

Tigers consolidated their position in the league today with an emphatic victory over Aldington. Just a handful of games remain but the boys still harbour outside hopes of winning their first championship if other results can go their way.

Playing in a new 3-5-2 formation the team started well. Dominating territorially they passed the ball to good effect and soon broke down the Aldington defence for Kieran to score. Aldington held out for a little longer before Tom got his name on the score-sheet for the first time this season with a well struck effort from the edge of the area. Not many games finish without Hamish celebrating a goal and this was no different as he put the boys 3 up before half time.

A somewhat dispirited Aldington side did not pose much of a threat in the second half as Tigers’ midfield, inspired by Declan, seemed to win every 50:50 challenge. Creating a lot of chances that went begging or were saved by Aldington’s keeper (their best player by far) Tigers failed to add to their lead until Ola finally scrambled in a half chance. Next the ever influential Hamish added to his total before Joe B had a penalty saved.

The partisan crowd were all pleased to see Charlie score his first goal. Neat footwork and a composed finish under pressure from close range proving just reward for his efforts and enthusiasm this season. Soon afterwards Ola, playing his most effective game this season, smacked in a left foot shot that he celebrated in his customary acrobatic style.

James was unlucky when his long solo run from defence through midfield and into the area resulted in his shot going narrowly wide. Finally, Kieran rounded off a good performance with a fine run down the left, cutting inside to shoot with unerring accuracy into the far corner. Mention this week goes to Joe H. Joe had a fine game at right back today - diligent in his defensive responsibilities and effective when pushing forward - he is fast establishing himself as Tigers’ most improved player this season.

Match Report Saturday 5th March 2011
Tenterden Tigers Vs Grasshoppers Yellow in ADYFL Under 13’s

Tigers started brightly with an early strike from Joe D but any hopes of a walkover were quickly put on hold as Grasshoppers Yellow struck back almost immediately to level the scores in a frantic opening to this match.

The home side then dominated possession as Tigers struggled to find their form until a wise refereeing decision overruled a flag for offside, to allow play to continue before Declan found the net with a cool finish to put Tigers back in front. Nevertheless Grasshoppers continued to play well and made a mockery of their current league position when an excellent move was followed by a fierce shot that Karl could only push on to the bar before a lively forward tapped in the rebound to level the scores once again.

The rest of the first half was a tight contest and, playing against the wind, the boys were in danger of losing the midfield battle and even the match. Half time gave them a chance to regroup and a tactical change saw Hamish dropping back from his customary striker’s role into midfield. Hamish’s deft first touch, neat trickery and subtle passes were more influential in this midfield role - taking some pressure off his team mates and buying Tigers some breathing space to play.

Despite this improvement it still took a long time before Grasshoppers’ resolve was finally broken – in the end it came from a neat interchange of passes from Tigers’ defence to midfield before Hamish was released to face the keeper one on one. As the keeper bravely rushed to meet him, Hamish lobbed the ball over his outstretched arms only to see it drift past the post. However the referee had spotted a foul by the keeper and awarded a penalty which Joe B duly dispatched (a much deserved reward for Joe after yet another excellent display in defence).

The fourth goal was set up by Joe H with a delightful pass into Hamish’s path to set him free from midfield again, this time he poked the ball past the keeper and was pleased to see it stay the right side of the post. By now Grasshoppers Yellow were a beaten side and it was left to Toby, bravely playing through the pain of an injured shoulder, to round off proceedings with his eighth goal of the season.

All in all this was a tough game, perhaps tougher than was expected, and for long periods the outcome was difficult to predict. Credit should go to the boys for battling through, in particular Declan who gave a noticeably determined performance in midfield and Ola who continues to improve.

Tenterden Tigers Vs High Halden Hornets in ADYFL Under 13’s

Having not played a league game for over 2 months because of the bad weather Tigers made light work of their locals rivals Hornets with an impressive victory.

After hitting the crossbar twice (Hamish and Joe D) and having had a goal ruled out for a foul, Tigers opened the scoring through Kieran. A period of Tigers pressure then saw Toby score the second.

The next goal was undoubtedly the best the boys have scored this season. Tom and Joe H exchanged passes before Tom beat a couple of challenges and sent a good ball through to James who then played Hamish in. Hamish’s pinpoint cross found Toby at the back post whose composed finish rounded off a great team move.

Having added a noticeable new passing side to his game Hamish himself then scored the fourth before Kieran added a tidy strike to put the team 5-0 up at half time.

Early in the second half Kieran notched his hat trick before Hornets got their consolation goal through former Tigers’ player Guven. By this time Karl had come out of goal for a spell in midfield and he finished a strong solo run with a left footed drive into the roof of the net. The ever alert Kieran rounded off the scoring with another accurate finish from the edge of the box to end the game with 4 goals.

Joe H had his best game for Tigers so far, showing greatly improved control and ability whilst Declan’s awareness and range of passing was again in evidence. This was a good game, played in a good spirit, with barely a foul to speak of.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Grasshoppers Green in ADYFL Under 13’s

A cold and frosty morning awaited the teams at Appledore today as Tigers set out to avenge the defeat at the hands of Grasshoppers Green from three weeks ago.

The first half performance from the boys was arguably the best football they have played this season. In terms of control, passing and awareness the team played excellently. It was particularly noticeable that both full backs, Miles and Joe H, seem increasingly comfortable on the ball and looked to play effective passes, rather than rushed clearances where possible.
The scoring was opened with an almost casual finish from the gifted Hamish and soon the dominant Tigers found themselves two nil up when Toby’s shot deflected off a defender past the stranded  ‘Hoppers keeper. Toby was very influential in the first half and his surging run and accurate cross from the right led to Kieran scoring the next goal from close range.  With Tigers enjoying the majority of possession it wasn’t long before Hamish increased his haul for the season with a poacher’s goal and as the half time whistle sounded Grasshoppers were probably flattered by a mere 4 goal deficit.

However the second period was a different story. Tigers seemed to believe the game was all but won, whilst Grasshoppers returned with a renewed effort and very soon had a goal back. The game then swung from end to end with half chances for both teams. The boys could not quite recapture the form they had shown earlier and with too many passes going astray they were relieved to get to the end of the match - only conceding once more, a well taken penalty from ‘Hoppers star player.  All in all a great game and a vital result for the Tigers in terms of league positions.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Pilgrims in ADYFL Under 13’s

After sustaining a heavy loss in the Kent Cup to Ebbsfleet, a close loss away at Grasshoppers Green and a postponed game last week the team were keen to get back into winning ways with the away trip to Pilgrims.
However it was the home side which started the brighter and after an early strike was ruled out for off-side the Pilgrims soon had the ball in the back of the net again, this time a nice header after Karl had tipped a shot onto the crossbar. Clearly, they had improved since the game at the start of the season.  To their credit the Tigers kept calm and tried to play passing football – their heads did not drop because of the early setback - and soon Kieran made a positive run down the right and his speculative shot brought the team back level.

For the rest of the first half Tigers’ goal was relatively untroubled and with the benefit of playing down the hill the boys began to dominate. Soon a loose ball fell to Joe D in the area and he again showed his keen eye for a chance as he neatly put the Tigers 2 -1 up.

Into the second half and the Pilgrims showed renewed determination, their forwards really putting our strong defensive partnership of Tom and Joe B under pressure. Finally Pilgrims carved out a clear chance and a good quality finish put them level. Next, Tigers fans’ hearts were in their mouths when a good Pilgrims’ header looked destined for the back of net only for the well positioned Kieran to head it clear off the line.

Tigers regrouped and began to play their passing game again, a series of one touch moves settled the side down and at times they played some nice football across the midfield. With 10 minutes to go Tigers got the goal that was to be the winner – set free down the left Hamish made one of his trademark mazy runs and the resulting cross was bundled over the line by an unfortunate Pilgrims defender.

An exciting game this week and one which showed Tigers new found determination to overcome setbacks. Mention should go to Charlie, Declan and Miles who all had decent games.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Grasshoppers Green in ADYFL Under 13’s

The boys faced another unbeaten side today with previous results indicating that this should have been a close contest. Tenterden started well and could have had goal in the first minute after a good move. However, long periods of possession could not be turned into goals for the boys and in fact, with Grasshoppers hitting the bar twice in the same move, Tigers were pleased to get to half time without conceding.

The second half was more incident-packed as Grasshoppers scored twice in quick succession used the long ball route to put themselves 2 -0 in front. Tenterden continued to pass the ball much better than their opponents but found it difficult to get many shots away until Hamish snapped up a half chance to get them back into it.

As Tenterden pushed for the equaliser another long pass from Grasshoppers’ midfield resulted in their striker getting clear of our defence and slotting away a good finish to put them 3-1 up.

Undeterred by this setback, some more good play from Tenterden saw Toby exchange passes with Kieran before putting over an excellent cross that resulted in Declan scoring a goal that would have graced any game. As the keeper came to collect the ball Declan nipped in front of him and, with both feet off the floor, cushioned a superb volley over now stranded goalie into the net.

For the final 10 minutes Tenterden kept up the pressure but to no avail. This was a good, well contested match enjoyed by players and spectators alike. The result possibly flattered Grasshoppers but Tigers don’t have to wait long for the chance to redress the balance as the return match is next week.

Tenterden Tigers Vs Wye in ADYFL Under 13’s
The Tigers met their stiffest test of the season today, taking on the best team in the league in Wye Juniors who came to the game boasting a number of District level players in their squad.

For the first twenty minutes, although Wye had the edge with possession and had a couple more chances than Tenterden, the Tigers battled hard in midfield and were unfortunate to go behind when a mix up between defender and goalie saw Karl concede his first league goal of the season.

The team spirit was still in evidence as they bravely contested the rest of the half only to concede again before half-time to a very good shot from Wye which Karl was unlucky not to keep out.

A half time change in formation from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 (or 4-3-3) almost brought immediate dividends as a good move on the left found the incoming James whose shot screwed sadly wide. The change in formation buoyed the side and they showed a lot of determination to play the better football  for long periods before Wye broke free down the right and an excellent cross and finish put them 3-0 up.

With 15 minutes to go Kieran got the ball on the edge of the box and struck an unstoppable shot to give the boys hope. Wye then had a penalty awarded which they put wide and for the final ten minutes Tigers pressed forward but to no avail.

Although the Tigers lost for the first time this season there were plenty of positive things to take from the match as well as things to learn from an excellent opposition which will stand the team in better stead for the future.

Sunday 3rd October 2010
Kent County U13 Youth Cup – First round
Tenterden Tigers Vs Maidstone United Royals

A new challenge at a higher level this week as the Tigers set off on this year's Cup trail. Drawn away against an unbeaten Maidstone side the Tigers had to settle quickly as their opponents started the match confidently, enjoying the lion's share of early possession.

However, with 15 minutes gone Toby set Keiran on his way and after skilfully beating two opponents he confidently slotted in the opening goal to put the boys in front. The rest of the first half was evenly matched and Declan and Callum, in particular, worked very hard in midfield to contain their opposite numbers. With Karl called upon to make two good saves the Tigers were happy to get to half time still in front, although Keiran had had the ball in the net once more - only for it to be ruled offside.

Maidstone picked up the pace from the kick off and soon levelled the game through their dangerous number 9 who struck a decent volley from a tight angle. After battling to win the ball on the edge of the area Joe D soon managed to put the Tigers back in front with a crafted chip into the top corner of the goal.

Time and time again Maidstone threatened to score but the defenders did their jobs well and on the occasions that they were beaten Karl pulled off some excellent saves. Then a delighted Ola got his first goal this season to put Tigers 3-1 up before Maidstone's hopes rose as they scored again.

At 3-2 it really was an open contest and the game swung from end to end before Tigers won a corner which Keiran sent into the six yard box only for the unfortunate keeper to spill into his own net. With ten minutes to go and at 4-2 down Maidstone still did not give up and somehow managed to win a penalty. Karl confirmed his place as unofficial man of the match when he produced a magnificent stop from the first effort and reacted even more impressively to stop the follow up shot.

The penalty save was the last major incident of the game and Tigers can be proud to have beaten a skilful side and move into the next round. The team worked very hard to protect their lead on a blustery day when space and time to play attractive football were at a premium. There were some good performances from a number of players today and this result serves to highlight how far the boys have progressed.
